Year 5 at Uprising Project
Year 5 have been part of musical workshops and then a sharing performance in conjunction with Saffron Walden County High School, Saffron Hall and Cambridge University. The work has been in relation to climate change, and an exciting new opera, Uprising, by composer Jonathon Dove.
The project was designed to use creative, musical approaches to explore the themes:
-
How can we better understand our connection to the world around us?
-
How can we balance our personal needs with the health of the planet?
-
How can we be positive contributors to a sustainable future?
The immersive approach – led by folk musician Hazel Askew and Cambridge University’s Sarah Sharp - explored how there are no ‘right answers’ to these questions, but how, in thinking about the future and the decisions we make, we can keep contributing to positive change. The children enjoyed learning songs, composing further verses of songs, and exploring in various inventive ways how we are linked to the environment and the impact of the choices we all have to make. They also enjoyed listening to and performing with a wide range of instruments.
